Doing theology
Do you "do" theology with your students? Have you given them practice at doing theology? I haven't done it often, but I think it is a worthy idea for regular consideration. I recently went looking for a used car to replace one that I'd had stolen. It gave me an opportunity to find something different. Little did I know it would give me a chance to practice my theology.
God certainly can work in every aspect of our lives if we'll allow him to do so. Initially, I thought to replace my Saturn with another Saturn. Seemed logical, if boring. Then I saw it - a 1988 Range Rover with a hideous white spray painted paint job that made it look like winter camoflage. It had things painted on it like a peace symbol, a fish skeleton, and a hand with a heart in the palm. The words "Tell the Truth" were stenciled on one door. It caught my eye. It was old, it was homely, it was just what I was looking for.
I went through the practical step of talking to the owner. It was a vehicle donated to a local charity for fundraising. Cool. I dig that. My wife and I have donated a car ourselves. Get a vehicle and support a charity, too. Nice. That fit my theology. Help those helping others. I had the car checked out by my mechanic. The Bible says to be gentle as a dove and wise as a serpent! The car needed work (pricey work at that!) but it was deemed a solid vehicle if I wanted a "project car." I guess I decided that a project wouldn't be so bad. Fixing up something of seemingly questionable worth to make it good again fit my theology. God takes us sinners, loves us through the rough stuff, never gives up on us, and sees us through to the end. Hey, this ain't so bad. The pricey repairs remind me that it's not painless to fix things up for a car or for a child of God, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth it.
There is at least one trade off for this. It's an SUV, and a big one at that. My wife drives a smaller SUV that I don't feel very guilty about. The gas mileage on it isn't awful. This "new" beast has an 8 cylinder engine. It doesn't know how to sip gasoline. It drinks deeply. I am committed to making sure it always stays as low as is practicable with its emissions testing. It failed the test last week and the mechanic is working on it with all the other stuff. It's not just a legal thing, it's moral. It'll have new tires with its tune up to get the best mileage possible. It's worth doing right if I'm going to do it.
OK. So with my story in mind, I can explain my theological reasons for buying this car to others; my students even. I enjoy telling the story (obvious, no?) and helping others to see how God and faith can play a vital role in making decisions and living life. God wants to be there with us. We need to help our students to see how it works through our lives. Life lived well is good theology. Go and do.

Jim,
What a good perspective on your thoughts posted on your website…I truly enjoyed reading your comments:

I have worked with youth and children for many, many years and truly enjoy that ‘calling.’ I am a lifelong United Methodist in Dallas, Texas, and used to work at SMU/Perkins School of Theology as an Administrative Assistant. My professional working history includes working at ‘The United Methodist Reporter’ – had some wonderful dynamics there working along side the editorial writers. Currently, I’m an office manager at an architect’s office. The Lord has placed me in some wonderful places that have enriched my life.
What I like most of the Methodist faith is John Wesley’s conversion; the family Christian life of Susanna and Samuel Wesley and how they raised their children. What a great set of parents.
Being a pioneer on the website and not knowing exactly how to navigate, I came across your website (not by accident, I believe, but by Divine Providence) and really like your webpage background where your ‘blogspot’ is.
And on your webpage, I saw where you attended one of our Methodist schools:
Methodist Theological School-Ohio (2003)
Masters, Christian Education
And have been employed at this church since September-2003:
St. Stephen's UMC ~ Albuquerque, NM
Director of Youth & Family Ministries
My interests are in Creation and Biblical Prophecy (alpha and omega) and am looking for the signs of His second coming -- pretty much like the wise men did. But due to my limited time and resources, I cannot do this full-time, although I do believe the signs of His return are pretty evident and close. And I challenge anyone to think about what the purpose would be of us living for another 100 years in this same manner and behavior would be. There is more to this life than just our pure humanistic enjoyment on this planet. There is a ‘spiritual warfare’ going on and there is purpose to our lives. And there will be an end and a Day of Judgment.
Now that I have expressed my views, what are your thoughts on this subject? Maybe I’ll read about it on your blogspot and/or get a response from you. In either case, I wanted you to know what this webviewer thought. I became more than a web browser, once I started to read your column and be invited to make comments.
COMMENT #1:
It was very difficult for me to read your WEBPAGE that has the ORANGE words with the dark background – it blinded me. Would you please consider another color that is not so hard on the eyes? Sure would appreciate it.
COMMENT #2:
Since the following stood out clearly, I guess you would like for webviewers to know that you bear the:
Zodiac sign: Libra
Which leads me to conclude that you are interested in those ‘signs’ and that several other persons on your website are listed under a Zodiac sign, also. I know there is something to the Master’s design of the stars and something to the interpretation of the Zodiac signs, that is why the wise men looked THERE for the ‘signs’ of His arrival. And I believe the signs are there, too, on His second coming. I was born on January 2.
There is also something to ‘NUMEROLOGY’ – I think – but again, I don’t know enough about it to elaborate. I am open on both subjects to learn more.
And then, there is the ANGELIC REALM – the Holy government of God. Our earthly government is similar to His system:
God/Head/King ~ ordained officials (Bishops/Pastors-Ministers/Laity) ~ followers/Disciples/congregation ~ the Law (enforcement/punishment)
Jesus Christ is not democratic! He is King over all and demands total allegiance! His Kingdom come, His will be done on earth as it is in Heaven!
COMMENT #3:
Sorry, but I could not understand the message in this phrase that you are trying to convey to the webviewers:
2 elephants having sex with another dead elephant
Thanks for your ministry, Jim! God bless you, as only He can, and know that I am praying for your wife’s total eradication of cancer – miracles occur every day! Pray OUT LOUD as my fellow Korean UMC congregation does and as they did in Bible times.
